A former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Atwima Nwabiagya South, Hon. Amoah Awuku, has warned that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) risks remaining in opposition for up to 12 years unless it urgently reforms its internal structures, restores discipline and rebuilds public confidence.
The outspoken party stalwart made the remarks yesterday after filing his nomination to contest for the position of Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NPP.
Addressing party faithful and supporters, Hon. Awuku said his decision to seek the office was driven by what he described as a genuine fear that the party could spend a prolonged period in opposition if members failed to learn from past mistakes.
“My biggest motivation is the fear that the NPP is going to be in opposition for more years. If we do not do the right things, we could remain in opposition for 12 years,” he cautioned.
According to him, the NPP must undertake serious introspection and address the issues that have weakened its image among the Ghanaian electorate.
He noted that the increasing tendency of party members to publicly attack one another has created a negative perception about the party and undermined its credibility.
“The harsh way we sometimes speak to one another as a political party is not helping us. If things are not done right, we will stay in opposition for a long time,” he stressed.
Hon. Awake said having served as MCE under an NPP government, he owed a duty to give back to the party that provided him the opportunity to serve.
“I benefited from the party, and now that it is in opposition and struggling, I believe it is my responsibility to step in and support efforts to ensure that we bounce back to power,” he stated.
The aspiring Regional Secretary said his immediate priority would be to help restore the NPP’s political dominance in the Ashanti Region, regarded as the party’s electoral stronghold.
He indicated that rebuilding the party would require unity, effective organisation, discipline and stronger collaboration among executives, constituency officers and the rank-and-file.
Hon. Awuku maintained that discipline must once again become the hallmark of the NPP, arguing that many Ghanaians had become unhappy with some conduct exhibited by sections of the party in recent times.
He expressed confidence that with committed leadership, renewed grassroots mobilisation and a united front, the NPP would reposition itself as a formidable political force capable of returning to power in the next general election.
He therefore appealed to delegates to entrust him with the mandate to serve as Ashanti Regional Secretary, promising to work tirelessly to rebuild the party and reclaim its electoral fortunes.
