The Ahafo Region has achieved a major milestone in its educational and socio-economic development with the establishment of its first-ever public university campus following the official commissioning of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa’s second campus at Kenyasi No. 2.
The campus, inaugurated on July 23, 2026, is expected to transform tertiary education in the region by providing specialised training in mining, agribusiness and entrepreneurship—three sectors considered critical to Ahafo’s economic growth and long-term development.
The commissioning marks a significant step in government’s efforts to expand access to quality higher education while equipping young people with practical skills that respond to the country’s industrial and economic needs.
Modern Learning Facilities.
The newly commissioned campus boasts modern infrastructure designed to provide students with a conducive academic environment.
Key facilities include a four-storey lecture block with eight spacious classrooms and designated areas for laboratories to support practical learning and research.
The campus also features two 120-seater lecture pavilions, a 96-bed hostel to accommodate students, a lecturer’s bungalow, and a library currently under construction, which is expected to enhance teaching, learning and academic research.
The investment is expected to attract students from across Ghana while creating employment opportunities and stimulating economic activities within Kenyasi and surrounding communities.
Focus on Strategic Sectors.
The university’s academic programmes will focus on mining, agribusiness and entrepreneurship, reflecting Ahafo’s vast mineral resources and agricultural potential.
Education experts believe the specialised programmes will help produce graduates with the technical knowledge and entrepreneurial skills needed to support Ghana’s industrialisation agenda, promote responsible mining practices and modernise agriculture.
The institution is also expected to strengthen research and innovation in these sectors while fostering partnerships between academia, industry and local communities.
Another Public University on the Way
In another major boost for higher education in the region, construction is progressing on the University of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Akrodie.
The institution is being established through the conversion and upgrade of the existing Akrodie STEM School into what will become the Ahafo Region’s first autonomous public university.
When completed, the university is expected to provide specialised education in engineering, technology and applied sciences, further expanding tertiary education opportunities for students within the region and beyond.
