The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PIWAK Natural Health, Dr Prince Nelson Mortoti, has urged the public to pay greater attention to persistent ear pain, commonly referred to as earache or “ear sore”, saying the condition should not be dismissed as a minor health complaint.
According to Dr Mortoti, discomfort in the ear can interfere with an individual’s daily activities, concentration, sleep and general wellbeing, particularly when the underlying cause is not identified and addressed promptly.
He said although some cases of ear pain may resolve without major intervention, persistent, severe or recurring symptoms could indicate an infection or another underlying condition requiring medical assessment.
Causes
Ear pain can have several causes, with ear infections being among the common ones.
Medical evidence indicates that middle-ear infections can be caused by bacteria or viruses and may develop following conditions such as a cold, flu or allergies. These illnesses can cause swelling and blockage of the Eustachian tubes, resulting in fluid accumulation behind the eardrum which can subsequently become infected.
Another form of infection affects the outer ear canal and is commonly known as “swimmer’s ear”. It can occur when bacteria infect the skin lining the ear canal, particularly where moisture remains in the ear.
Other factors that may contribute to ear discomfort include excessive moisture, irritation of the ear canal, allergies, congestion and problems affecting the Eustachian tubes.
Dr Mortoti therefore advised the public to avoid assuming that every earache has the same cause, stressing the importance of proper assessment where symptoms persist.
Signs to watch
Some of the symptoms associated with ear infections include ear pain, pressure or fullness in the ear, difficulty hearing and fluid or discharge from the ear.
In children, warning signs may also include pulling or tugging at the ear, unusual irritability, difficulty sleeping, fever, loss of balance and reduced response to sounds.
Dr Mortoti encouraged parents and caregivers, in particular, to pay attention to children who repeatedly complain of ear pain or appear to have difficulty hearing.
Possible implications
The health implications of untreated or recurrent ear problems, according to medical guidance, should not be underestimated.
Repeated ear infections can contribute to hearing difficulties, while persistent infections may result in complications such as a perforated eardrum. In rare and serious cases, infection can spread to tissues around the skull and, potentially, the membranes surrounding the brain.
Dr Mortoti said the possibility of such complications should encourage individuals to seek appropriate medical care rather than relying solely on self-medication.
Prevention
Dr Mortoti recommended that people adopt healthy practices as part of efforts to protect their ears and overall wellbeing.
Medical guidance recommends measures such as practising good hand hygiene to reduce respiratory infections, avoiding exposure to second-hand smoke, staying up to date with appropriate vaccinations and taking steps to prevent illnesses that can contribute to middle-ear infections.
For outer-ear infections, keeping the ears dry after swimming or bathing can help reduce the risk. People are also advised against inserting foreign objects into the ear canal to remove earwax or scratch an itchy ear because this can damage the delicate skin and increase the risk of infection.
Dr Mortoti’s call for healthy living
Dr Mortoti also used the opportunity to encourage the public to pay attention to nutrition and general wellness as part of a healthy lifestyle.
He advocated the consumption of garlic-based products, including PIWAK Natural Health’s 3P Garlic Mixture, as part of what he describes as a wellness routine.
However, consumers should note that such a product should not be regarded as a substitute for professional diagnosis or treatment of an ear infection. There is also no established medical evidence in the sources reviewed that 3P Garlic Mixture can prevent or cure ear infections.
When to seek medical attention
Health professionals advise that persistent or worsening ear symptoms should be evaluated rather than ignored.
Medical attention is particularly important when ear pain is severe, symptoms persist for more than a few days, there is fluid, pus or blood coming from the ear, or there is noticeable hearing loss.
Dr Mortoti therefore urged members of the public to make their health a priority and to seek medical attention whenever they experience persistent or unusual ear symptoms.
He said early attention to health concerns remained important in protecting people’s quality of life and preventing minor problems from developing into more serious conditions.
