The Second Vice Chairman for Suame Constituency of New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Richard Akwasi Asante, says the Majority Leader’s non-Akan comment was made in good faith without any malicious intent.
According to him, Hon Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, trumpeted the position taken by majority of Ghanaians.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Mr Asante, noted that many people in the country, who believe same, informed executives of party in the Suame Constituency during the electioneering campaign to bring a non-Akan Presidential candidate for 2024 presidential election.
Mr Asante, who is a former Parliamentary Research Assistant, noted that to crucify the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame will yield no results since such comment is in the minds of most Ghanaians.
According to him, the Majority Leader only acted as a conduit to publicly represent the wishes of the masses.
Mr Asante, disclosed that such non-Akan comment is generic and qualifies all aspirants from all regions apart from Ashanti, Central and Eastern regions therefore those who are now sleepless maybe targeted the Vice President Alhaji Mahamoud Bawumiah.
“Most Ghanaians believe NPP is an Akan Party therefore any attempt to bring an Akan after President John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will attest to such perception” Mr Asante said.
The Vice Chairman therefore asked persons with presidential ambitions to end such attacks on the Majority Leader since such comment doesn’t constitute a breach of any provision in the party’s constitution.
