Ashanti Regional Minister Calls for National Discourse on Brain Drain in Healthcare Sector

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has emphasized the need for an urgent national discourse on the growing issue of brain drain, particularly within the healthcare sector.
Despite significant investment in the education and training of healthcare professionals, many are leaving Ghana for opportunities abroad, sparking concerns about the country’s ability to retain skilled professionals.
Speaking at the International Day of the Midwife celebration held in Kumasi on May 7, 2025, Dr. Amoakohene highlighted the critical issue of brain drain in the healthcare sector. The theme of the celebration, “Critical in Every Crisis,” underscored the importance of midwives and other healthcare professionals in times of crisis. However, the increasing number of health professionals leaving Ghana for greener pastures abroad poses a significant challenge to the country’s healthcare system.
Dr. Amoakohene stressed the need for Ghana to create enabling conditions to retain skilled professionals and curb the brain drain. He emphasized that the country’s investment in the education and training of healthcare professionals is being undermined by the loss of talent to other countries. To address this issue, the government and other stakeholders must work together to create an environment that supports the growth and development of healthcare professionals.
