The Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) has marked another significant milestone in its maiden Welfare Month celebration with a day of indoor games, a quiz competition and awards, creating an atmosphere of fun, teamwork and camaraderie among staff across the Authority.

The programme, held on Friday, August 14, 2026, brought together staff at the Authority’s offices in Tema, Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi for a refreshing break from their usual work routines.
The activities formed part of the GFZA’s broader effort to promote staff welfare, wellness, appreciation and team bonding under the theme, “Empowered People, a Stronger Authority: Promoting Wellness for Sustainable Growth.”
The day featured a series of engaging indoor games and a quiz competition designed to encourage interaction, healthy competition and collaboration among employees. Staff participated enthusiastically, with laughter, cheering and friendly rivalry dominating the various activities.
The Chief Executive Officer of the GFZA, Dr Mary Awusi, joined staff at both the Tema Office and Head Office, while the Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Finance and Administration, Mr Hamidu Sibiri Musah, participated in the activities with staff at the Takoradi Office.
At the Kumasi Office, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Operations, Mr Lateef Apau Wiredu, joined employees in the celebrations.

The participation of members of Management across the different locations underscored the Authority’s commitment to ensuring that staff outside the headquarters are equally included in initiatives designed to promote employee welfare and institutional cohesion.
August Holds Special Significance
Addressing staff, Dr Awusi said the decision to hold the Welfare Month celebration in August was particularly significant to the GFZA because the month occupies an important place in the history of the Authority.
According to her, the Free Zones Programme was established through the enactment of the Free Zones Act in August 1995, making the month symbolic in the development of the Authority and its mandate.
She explained that it was therefore appropriate for the Authority to use the same month that marked the birth of the Free Zones Programme to celebrate the people who continue to drive its operations.
Dr Awusi said August should not only represent the beginning of the Free Zones Programme but should also herald the beginning of a lasting culture of staff wellbeing, appreciation and togetherness within the Authority.
She encouraged employees to embrace the spirit of the celebration and recognise the importance of maintaining healthy relationships and a strong sense of belonging at the workplace.
Management Emphasises Teamwork
At the Takoradi Office, Mr Hamidu Sibiri Musah urged staff to use the occasion to renew their commitment to teamwork, mutual respect and collaboration.
He noted that the success of any institution depended significantly on the ability of its employees to work together towards common goals.
Mr Musah encouraged staff to maintain the positive relationships developed through the Welfare Month activities and translate the spirit of teamwork into their everyday professional responsibilities.
At the Kumasi Office, Mr Lateef Apau Wiredu also stressed the central role of employees in the growth and effectiveness of the Authority.
He said the greatest strength of the GFZA was its people, adding that a workforce that is healthy, motivated and empowered would make the Authority stronger and better positioned to deliver effectively on its mandate.
Fun, Competition and Camaraderie
The indoor games and quiz provided staff with an opportunity to temporarily step away from their regular professional responsibilities and interact with colleagues in a relaxed environment.
The activities also allowed employees to showcase their talents, test their knowledge and strengthen interpersonal relationships across departments and offices.
The friendly competitions generated enthusiastic cheering and laughter, while the awards provided an opportunity to recognise and celebrate participants and staff.
Beyond the entertainment, the activities were designed to strengthen the bonds among employees and promote a workplace culture where staff feel valued, connected and motivated.
The GFZA said the positive atmosphere witnessed during the activities reflected the essence of the Welfare Month theme — that empowered people are fundamental to building a stronger institution capable of achieving sustainable growth.
The maiden Welfare Month programme therefore continues to serve as an important platform for promoting employee wellness, appreciation and unity while reinforcing the Authority’s commitment to its workforce.
