Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has announced his withdrawal from the ongoing “Thank You” tour by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This decision comes after a violent incident involving the stabbing of a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), affiliated with Unity Hall, during a recent event.

The Incident.

The incident occurred when a wealthy friend of Agyapong’s team gave money to the Jama group, a performance troupe from Unity Hall’s Jama group, at an event held at the Pentecost Church in Bantama, Kumasi.

However, a group of heavily built, gun-wielding men believed to be affiliated with the NPP allegedly emerged and forcibly took the money. A confrontation broke out, resulting in the stabbing of one member of the Jama group.

Aftermath.

The victim was rushed to the emergency unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and is currently receiving treatment. Agyapong’s team has lodged an official complaint with the Kumasi Central Police Command. Citing security threats to his supporters, Agyapong confirmed his withdrawal from the tour, stating, “Because of what happened yesterday, myself and my team want to pull out because lives are threatened.”

Pursuing Justice.

Agyapong vowed to pursue justice for the victim, emphasizing that he cannot guarantee the safety of his team. With his withdrawal, the NPP’s “Thank You” tour will likely continue without Agyapong’s involvement, allowing Dr. Bawumia to proceed with his campaign. The incident raises concerns about security and party dynamics within the NPP.
