Nationwide Power Outage Hits Ghana as GRIDCo Investigates System Disturbance

A major power system disturbance plunged several parts of Ghana into darkness in the early hours of Wednesday after a fault on the National Interconnected Transmission System triggered the simultaneous shutdown of some electricity generation plants across the country.

The incident, which occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, caused widespread interruption in electricity supply, affecting homes, businesses, industries and other essential services.

In a press statement issued in Tema, the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) confirmed that the nationwide disturbance originated from the country’s transmission network and resulted in the unexpected tripping of a number of power generation plants.

According to GRIDCo, the disruption affected the National Interconnected Transmission System, leading to a temporary loss of electricity supply in several parts of the country.
Restoration Efforts Underway
The company assured the public that engineers and system operators immediately activated established power restoration procedures following the incident.
It stated that technical personnel are working around the clock in close collaboration with key stakeholders in the power sector to restore electricity supply to all affected areas as quickly as possible while ensuring the safety and stability of the national grid.
GRIDCo emphasized that restoring power safely remains its highest priority and indicated that every effort is being made to minimize the duration of the outage.
Technical Investigation Commences
Beyond restoration efforts, GRIDCo disclosed that a comprehensive technical investigation has already begun to establish the exact cause of the system disturbance.
The company noted that experts are carefully assessing the incident to determine what triggered the simultaneous shutdown of generating plants and to recommend measures that will help prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Apology to Consumers
GRIDCo expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the outage and appealed to the public for patience and understanding as engineers work to fully stabilize the national electricity transmission network.

The company assured electricity consumers that updates would be provided as more information becomes available regarding both the restoration process and the outcome of the ongoing technical investigations.
