The National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Joseph Yamin, has emphasized that miners who engage in illegal mining activities, particularly in forests and water bodies, are not aligned with the Ghana government’s vision.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Amenfi Central, Western Region, Mr. Yamin outlined the party’s plans to work with miners to acquire Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) licenses and secure legal concessions.

Collaboration with Miners.

The NDC’s initiative aims to transition miners from illegal to legal operations.

Mr. Yamin assured that his outfit, in collaboration with the Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, Hon. Joana Gyan Cudjoe, would facilitate the acquisition of EPA licenses and legal concessions for miners. This move is expected to promote responsible mining practices and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

Regulating Mining Activities.

To prevent “cross-carpet” operations, where miners operate in districts other than their own, Mr. Yamin announced that excavators and mining equipment would be required to be kept at the District Assembly. This measure aims to curb illegal mining activities and promote accountability.

Reducing Accidents.

Mr. Yamin also highlighted the potential benefits of regulating mining activities, including a reduction in accidents caused by abandoned mining pits. By ensuring that miners operate responsibly and safely, the NDC aims to minimize the risks associated with mining.

The NDC’s initiative to regulate mining activities and promote sustainability is a step in the right direction. By working with miners and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, the party aims to create a more responsible and accountable mining sector.

This approach has the potential to benefit both the environment and the local communities, while also promoting economic development.
