The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has met with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) over recent power supply challenges in parts of the Ashanti Region.
At the meeting, ECG explained that the challenges were caused by equipment failures, cable faults and ongoing infrastructure upgrade works across the transmission and sub-transmission networks.
The Regulatory and Reliability Performance Monitoring Meeting was held at ECG’s Boadi office in Kumasi on Friday, October 16, 2026, as part of PURC’s regulatory mandate to monitor electricity reliability and quality of service, assess operational challenges and ensure compliance with service delivery standards in the interest of consumers.
Presenting on behalf of the General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission, the Manager for Network Maintenance, Ing. James Mensah Yevunya, attributed the recent outages to two current transformer (CT) blasts on the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) network and two cable faults at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point (BSP) and Boadi Primary Substation.
He said ongoing upgrade projects by GRIDCo and ECG had also placed additional constraints on the system.
According to him, GRIDCo is upgrading its transformer capacity at Ridge BSP from 50/66MVA to 120/145MVA, while ECG is installing new 8-way 33kV panels at Ridge to accommodate the increased capacity and improve power distribution.
Ing. Yevunya assured the Commission that ECG was expediting works on its installations to be able to receive and utilize the upgraded capacity to improve supply to consumers across the region.
For his part, the Ashanti Regional Manager of PURC, Mr. Edward Boduah Kingston, urged ECG to keep the Commission regularly informed about ongoing infrastructure projects and operational developments to enable the public to receive timely and accurate information on supply conditions.
He also called for adequate resourcing of ECG’s Public Relations office to strengthen collaboration with the media and PURC in communicating technical operations and service challenges in a manner consumers can easily understand.
The meeting was attended by Ing. Nicholas Frempong, Principal Manager, Energy Services and Performance Monitoring (ESPM) Directorate, PURC; Mr. Edward Boduah Kingston, Ashanti Regional Manager, PURC; Ing. Enyonam Kumi, Principal Regulatory Engineer, ESPM Directorate; Mr. Cecil Oduro Nyarko, Regulatory Engineer, ESPM Directorate; Ing. James Mensah Yevunya, Manager, Network Maintenance, ECG; Ing.
