Residents of Adubinso, a community in the Afigya Kwabre South District in the Ashanti region , have expressed deep frustration and anger over what they describe as years of neglect by authorities regarding the deplorable state of the community’s only public toilet facility.
According to residents, the sole toilet serving the entire community has been in a state of disrepair for nearly a decade, with the facility now completely choked with human waste. The situation, they say, has rendered the facility virtually unusable, forcing both residents and visitors to endure unhygienic and undignified conditions.
The once-essential facility has deteriorated into a health hazard, with human excreta overflowing and surrounding the structure.
The stench emanating from the area is said to be unbearable, while the environment has been overtaken by filth, uncollected waste, and overgrown weeds. Many residents fear the conditions could trigger the outbreak of diseases if urgent steps are not taken.
Speaking to local reporters, some residents lamented that despite several appeals and complaints lodged over the years, little to no action has been taken to address the issue. They described the situation as a clear example of neglect and called for immediate intervention.
“For the past ten years, this has been the only toilet facility serving our community, yet it has been left to deteriorate beyond use,” one resident lamented. “We are suffering. The environment is not safe, and we have no proper place to attend to nature.”
Residents further stressed that the condition of the facility not only poses serious health risks but also undermines their dignity, particularly for women, children, and the elderly who are most affected by the lack of access to clean sanitation.
The community is now calling on the District Chief Executive, Pearl Patricia Ankrah, and other relevant authorities to urgently intervene by rehabilitating or replacing the facility. They are also appealing for broader sanitation measures to restore cleanliness and ensure a healthier environment.
Public health experts have consistently warned that poor sanitation conditions such as those reported in Adubinso can lead to the spread of infectious diseases, including cholera and dysentery, particularly in densely populated communities.
As frustrations mount, residents insist that swift and decisive action is long overdue. They are urging authorities to treat the matter as a priority, emphasizing that access to clean and safe sanitation is a basic human necessity that should not be compromised.
Until concrete steps are taken, the people of Adubinso say they will continue to endure what they describe as an unacceptable living condition—one that reflects a broader need for improved sanitation infrastructure across many underserved communities in the region.
