The Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has joined officials of Africa World Airlines (AWA) to welcome the airline’s newly acquired Embraer E190 aircraft at the Accra International Airport.

The arrival of the 102-seater aircraft is expected to significantly enhance the operational capacity of AWA while strengthening domestic and regional air connectivity.
The new aircraft is also expected to open up additional opportunities in tourism, trade and investment as Ghana seeks to consolidate its position as a major aviation and economic hub in West Africa.
At a ceremony to welcome the aircraft, Mr Nikpe commended AWA for its contribution to connecting destinations across sub-Saharan Africa and supporting efforts to improve air connectivity on the continent.

He said the addition of the new aircraft demonstrated the importance of collaboration between government and private sector players in developing Ghana’s aviation industry.
According to him, a strong and efficient aviation sector was essential to Ghana’s economic transformation, particularly in promoting tourism, facilitating business travel and improving regional trade.
Government Commitment
The Transport Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to investing in airport infrastructure and improving air connectivity across the country.
He noted that the government would continue to support measures aimed at creating an enabling environment for the aviation industry to expand and contribute more meaningfully to national development.
Mr Nikpe said improved airport infrastructure, coupled with increased airline capacity, would be critical to positioning Ghana as a leading aviation hub in West Africa.
He explained that a vibrant aviation sector would not only facilitate the movement of people but would also support commerce, tourism and investment by making Ghana more accessible to businesses and travellers from across the continent.
Boost for AWA
The Embraer E190, with a seating capacity of 102 passengers, is expected to provide AWA with additional capacity to serve its growing passenger base and strengthen its operations on selected domestic and regional routes.
The acquisition comes at a time when demand for efficient and reliable air transportation is increasingly important to regional economic integration.
With improved capacity, AWA is expected to be better positioned to connect Ghana to other destinations within the sub-region and contribute to the expansion of intra-African travel.
The airline has over the years played a role in connecting Ghana with destinations across sub-Saharan Africa, helping to facilitate the movement of business travellers, tourists and other passengers.
Tourism and Investment
The arrival of the aircraft is also expected to have positive implications for Ghana’s tourism and investment sectors.
Improved air connectivity can make destinations more accessible to tourists and international visitors, while providing businesses with more convenient travel options for regional operations and engagements.
The development could therefore support Ghana’s broader efforts to attract tourists, investors and businesses while strengthening the country’s links with other African economies.
The government has consistently highlighted the importance of transport infrastructure in driving economic growth, with aviation serving as a key component of Ghana’s international and regional connectivity.

Regional Integration.

Mr Nikpe also stressed the broader significance of aviation connectivity to the integration of African economies.

He said stronger air links among African countries would facilitate the movement of people and goods while supporting greater economic cooperation across the continent.

The addition of the E190 to AWA’s fleet is therefore being viewed as more than an expansion of the airline’s operational capacity, but also as a development that could contribute to Ghana’s wider aviation and regional integration ambitions.

The new aircraft marks another milestone for Ghana’s aviation industry and reinforces the strategic role of air transport in promoting economic development.

Mr Nikpe congratulated AWA on the acquisition and expressed confidence that the airline would continue to contribute to the growth of Ghana’s aviation sector and the strengthening of air connectivity within the sub-region.
