Staff of Luv Fm, an affiliate of Multimedia Ghana Limited (MGL) on Monday, donated some quantities of reusable sanitary pads and other brands to school girls in the Bosomtwe District.
The media outfit led by its morning show host, David Akuetteh from the Month of May launched an outreach programme to support school girls in remote areas in the Ashanti Region who had difficulty in accessing sanitary pads to deal with their monthly menstrual cycle.
This drive by the media outfit was also aimed at supporting the Menstrual Hygiene Day which was celebrated on the 17th of May, 2023 across Ghana.
Receiving the items, Mrs Rita Laar, Girl-Child Coordinator for the Bosomtwe District Education Directorate thanked Mr Akuetteh and his team for the gesture.
Durbar:
Meanwhile, the Bosomtwe Directorate has held a durbar to educate girls in the area on how to treat and deal with issues regarding their menstrual cycle.
Present at this ceremony were chiefs drawn from the community including the Jachie, Feyiase, Pramso and other adjoining towns.
Speaking at the event, Mrs Mimi Acquaah, Family Life Counsellor and Director of Children’s Ministry at Calvary Charismatic Center (CCC), advised the girls who are in their teen ages to keep themselves very well when they see their menses.
She noted that the menstrual cycle shows that they were becoming adults and therefore the need to keep themselves clean and neat.
Auntie Mimi, as the counselor is fondly referred to, cautioned the girls against pre-marital sex, adding that any sexual encounter with a male could result in pregnancies they may not be ready for.
‘’God specially designed us as women and our menstrual cycle shows our uniqueness but we must deal with the blood with sanitary pads or clean cloth so that we do not soil ourselves and thereby disgrace ourselves in public’’, the Counsellor advised.
Director of Girl Child:
Madam Rita Laar, Bosomtwe Director For Girl Child Education thanked the Chiefs and other stakeholders for responding to the invitation to be part of the occasion.
She noted that the way girls treat their menstrual cycle has a bearing on their physical well being and hygiene.
She therefore asked stakeholders and parents to keep an eye on their female children and wards by supporting them to deal with their cycle in a healthy and right way.
‘’I humbly plead with stakeholders in education as well as parents and caregivers to help our girls deal with their menstrual cycles healthily so that they can grow happily and cleanly’’, the Coordinator stated.
