The Ashanti Regional Police Command has intensified a full-scale manhunt for six heavily armed men who launched a deadly हमला on a team bus carrying players and officials of Berekum Chelsea, resulting in the tragic death of a young footballer and the robbery of a passenger.
The shocking incident occurred on Sunday night along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso stretch, a route increasingly raising security concerns among commuters. According to an official police statement released on April 13, 2026, the attackers ambushed a VIP bus with registration number AM 9334-20, which was transporting approximately 30 players and officials from Samreboi to Berekum.
Police reports indicate that the bus driver, in a desperate attempt to evade the armed assailants—three of whom were wielding pump-action guns—lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and skid into a nearby bush. The chaotic scene left passengers vulnerable as the attackers carried out their operation.
Amid the confusion, one of the players, identified as Dominic Frimpong, sustained fatal gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital for emergency treatment but sadly succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival, plunging the football fraternity into mourning.
In the same attack, a 52-year-old passenger, George Owusu Afriyie, was robbed of a cash amount of GH¢4,500 by the assailants before they fled the scene.
Investigators who arrived promptly at the location retrieved two spent BB cartridges, which are expected to aid ongoing forensic examinations as authorities work tirelessly to track down the perpetrators.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has since deployed additional personnel, including crime scene experts, to the affected area as part of a coordinated effort to apprehend the suspects. Law enforcement officials have assured the public that every resource is being mobilized to bring the culprits to justice.
In the statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyor, Head of the Public Affairs Unit for the region, the Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents and travelers.
“The Police assure the public that the perpetrators will be arrested within the shortest possible time,” the statement emphasized, while urging citizens to remain calm and cooperate with authorities by providing any relevant information that could assist in the investigation.
The tragic loss of Dominic Frimpong has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s football community, with calls growing louder for enhanced security on major highways, particularly during nighttime travel. The incident also highlights the persistent threat posed by armed robbery gangs on less-patrolled routes, reigniting national conversations about road safety and law enforcement visibility.
As investigations continue, the nation watches closely, hoping for swift justice and renewed measures to prevent such devastating occurrences in the future.
