The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has shut down an unlicensed facility at Asafo in Kumasi after uncovering a major sanitation and regulatory breach during activities marking the National Sanitation Day (KMA Edition).

The operation, led by the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, formed part of a desilting exercise at the busy Asafo Bus Terminal. Officials discovered an illegal sewage connection discharging directly into a public drain, posing a significant threat to public health and the environment.

Subsequent investigations traced the source of the illegal discharge to an unregistered hotel facility operating without the required permits from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Ghana Tourism Authority, and the KMA.

At the premises, authorities apprehended 22 women, most of whom are believed to be Nigerian nationals suspected of engaging in prostitution.

Preliminary checks further revealed that the individuals did not possess valid travel documentation and may have overstayed the 90-day limit permitted under Economic Community of West African States protocols.

The Assembly confirmed that the facility has been immediately shut down, while the apprehended individuals have been handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for further investigations and appropriate action.
In a related development, the Assembly also demolished an unauthorized urinal and toilet facility found to have been illegally connected to the same drainage system at the terminal.
The KMA reiterated its commitment to maintaining sanitation, safeguarding public health, and enforcing regulatory compliance across the metropolis. It cautioned businesses and individuals to strictly adhere to environmental and operational laws or face sanctions.

Residents have also been encouraged to report illegal activities that threaten public safety, as the Assembly has pledged to apply the full rigours of the law against offenders.
The statement was signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Assembly, Ms. Henrietta A.K. Aboagye, on behalf of the Metropolitan Chief Executive.
