An appeal for financial support has been launched to raise US$50,000 to facilitate an emergency kidney transplant for Mrs Alice Esther Owusu-Nketia, a nurse battling end-stage kidney disease.
Mrs Owusu-Nketia, whose condition requires regular haemodialysis, is seeking assistance from individuals, organisations, corporate bodies and benevolent members of the public to raise the funds needed for the life-saving procedure.
According to an appeal issued by The Kidney Specialist Centre, Mrs Owusu-Nketia is being treated for end-stage kidney disease secondary to suspected lupus nephritis.
The medical condition has left her dependent on haemodialysis twice a week through a tunnelled catheter, with the appeal indicating that she is also experiencing moderate anaemia, hyperuricaemia, hyperphosphataemia and systemic hypertension.
With the cost of long-term dialysis and the urgency of her condition, the proposed kidney transplant has been identified as an important intervention to improve her health and quality of life.
US$50,000 NEEDED
The estimated cost of the kidney transplant has been pegged at US$50,000, covering the pre-surgery preparations, the transplant procedure and post-surgery care.
The appeal is, therefore, calling on the public to contribute towards the target to enable Mrs Owusu-Nketia to undergo the procedure as soon as possible.
Mrs Owusu-Nketia, who works as a nurse, is pictured receiving haemodialysis in the appeal material, highlighting the seriousness of her condition and the need for continued medical care.
