The Chief Executive Officer of PIWAK Natural Health, Dr Prince Nelson Mortoti, has cautioned men against dismissing frequent urination and other urinary difficulties as normal signs of ageing, warning that such symptoms could be early indications of an enlarged prostate.
According to him, prostate enlargement, medically known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), is one of the most common health conditions affecting men, particularly those above the age of 40, and requires early diagnosis and management to prevent serious complications.
Speaking during a public health awareness campaign on men’s health, Dr Mortoti explained that many men unknowingly live with prostate-related conditions because they fail to recognise the warning signs or delay seeking medical attention.
“Frequent urination, especially during the night, should never be taken lightly. It may appear harmless initially, but in many cases it is one of the earliest signs of an enlarged prostate. Early detection can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes and quality of life,” he stated.
Dr Mortoti noted that prostate enlargement occurs when the prostate gland, which surrounds the urethra, increases in size and exerts pressure on the urinary tract. This can interfere with the normal flow of urine and result in a range of uncomfortable symptoms.
He indicated that although the condition is non-cancerous, its impact on daily life can be substantial if left untreated.
“The challenge is that many men suffer in silence. Some are embarrassed to discuss urinary problems, while others simply assume it is a normal part of getting older. Unfortunately, such assumptions can lead to complications,” he explained.
The health expert identified several symptoms commonly associated with prostate enlargement, including frequent urination, difficulty initiating urination, weak urine flow, sudden urgency to urinate, interrupted urine stream, dribbling after urination and the sensation of an incompletely emptied bladder.
He stressed that individuals experiencing any of these symptoms should seek professional medical evaluation immediately.
Dr Mortoti explained that untreated prostate enlargement can lead to bladder damage, recurrent urinary tract infections and, in severe cases, kidney complications.
He further observed that the condition can affect productivity and emotional well-being due to interrupted sleep patterns caused by repeated night-time visits to the bathroom.
“Many men with enlarged prostate struggle to get adequate sleep because they wake up several times at night to urinate. This often results in fatigue, reduced concentration and lower productivity during the day,” he said.
He added that prolonged prostate problems may also affect confidence, relationships and overall quality of life.
Prevention Through Healthy Living
Dr Mortoti encouraged men to adopt healthier lifestyles to reduce the risk of developing prostate-related complications.
He recommended regular exercise, balanced nutrition, increased consumption of fruits and vegetables, adequate hydration, avoidance of excessive alcohol intake and routine health screening.
According to him, annual prostate examinations should become a priority for men above 40 years, particularly those with a family history of prostate disorders.
The PIWAK CEO also highlighted the importance of natural wellness approaches in supporting prostate health. He pointed to the company’s 3P Garlic Mixture, which he described as a natural health product formulated to support general wellness and promote healthy body functions.
Dr Mortoti explained that garlic contains bioactive compounds known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a valuable component of healthy living.
He, however, emphasised that natural supplements should complement—not replace—professional medical care and regular health check-ups.
Dr Mortoti called on health authorities, civil society organisations and the media to intensify education on men’s health issues, particularly prostate enlargement, to encourage early diagnosis and treatment.
“Men must pay greater attention to their health. Frequent urination is not something to ignore. Seeking medical advice early can prevent complications and help individuals maintain a healthier and more active life,” he advised.
He urged families and communities to support awareness efforts and encourage men to undergo regular screening, stressing that early intervention remains one of the most effective ways of managing prostate enlargement and improving long-term health outcomes.
