The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has taken decisive action against commercial drivers who have refused to comply with its directive to charge approved transport fares.
In a recent operation, the KMA’s Transport task force arrested approximately 22 drivers and impounded their vehicles for grossly disobeying the Assembly’s order.
Fines for Non-Compliance.
According to Mr. Randy Wilson, Head of Urban Transport at KMA, the impounded vehicles will not be released until the recalcitrant commercial drivers pay a fine ranging from GH₵500 to GH₵1,500, as prescribed by the Assembly’s Special Exercise Fine, approved on July 28, 2023. This move is a clear indication of the KMA’s commitment to enforcing its regulations and ensuring that commercial drivers operate within the law.
Background to the Crackdown.
The KMA’s action is a follow-up to a press release issued by its Public Relations Unit on May 26, 2025, which reminded commercial drivers to comply with the 15% reduction in transport fares approved by the national leadership of transport unions, effective May 24, 2025. The release warned that any commercial driver who refused to charge the approved reduced fare would be committing a criminal offense punishable by law.
Enforcement and Sanity on the Roads.
The KMA’s Transport task force, comprising staff from the transport department, assembly members, metro guards, and other security officers, took action against the recalcitrant commercial drivers when they were found charging unapproved transport fares. Mr. Randy Wilson assured that the KMA is leaving no stone unturned in its attempt to ensure sanity and order on the roads in Kumasi and its immediate environs.
Commitment to Maintaining Order.
By cracking down on recalcitrant commercial drivers, the KMA is sending a strong message to the public that it will not relent in its bid to maintain order when it’s due. The Assembly’s commitment to enforcing its regulations and ensuring compliance with approved transport fares is a step in the right direction towards promoting a safe and orderly transportation system in Kumasi.
The KMA’s action against recalcitrant commercial drivers is a welcome development that is expected to promote compliance with approved transport fares and enhance the overall transportation experience for commuters in Kumasi. As the Assembly continues to enforce its regulations, it is hoped that commercial drivers will take the necessary steps to comply with the law and avoid the imposition of fines and other penalties.
