In line with its commitment to good governance, accountability, transparency, and probity, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) convened a Social Accountability Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, 30 April 2026, at the Prempeh Assembly Hall.
The forum brought together hundreds of residents, civil society organisations, traditional authorities, ratepayers, women and youth groups, the business community, and other stakeholders.
The meeting was held in accordance with Regulation 215 of the Public Financial Management (PFM) Regulations 2019 (LI 2378) and Section 42 of the Local Governance Act 2016 (Act 936), which mandate periodic public accountability on the use of public funds.
During the forum, KMA reviewed its 2025 plan and budget performance.
Mr. Jones Kani, Head of Budget and Rating, and Mr. Charles Adjei of the Development Planning Unit presented an abridged report on the Assembly’s 2025 budget position and state of development.
They outlined revenue performance, expenditures, and key development projects, supported by pictorial illustrations showing their impact on residents.
Sanitation, street lighting, decongestion, maintenance of law and order, and revenue mobilisation featured prominently on the talk board.
Addressing the gathering, Hon. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, Mayor of Kumasi, stated that it is the Assembly’s statutory obligation to periodically account for its stewardship, uphold good governance, and encourage public participation.
“This will be our guiding principle in the discharge of our duties,” he said, and appealed to the public to support the Assembly in working for the good of the city.
He noted with concern that a significant portion of the Assembly’s internally generated funds is spent on waste management, which he said undermines the execution of its development agenda.
He advised residents to keep their environment clean and called for public support to make waste management more cost-effective and to curb indiscriminate waste disposal.
Participants shared their views and raised several concerns, many of which were duly addressed and noted.
Mr. Francis Dwira Darko, Metro Coordinating Director, thanked participants for making time out of their busy schedules and assured them that all concerns raised would be addressed accordingly.
Nana Poku Agyemang Dwete, Asem Kyeamehene and Chairperson of the event, expressed delight at its success and urged the Assembly to continue encouraging public participation in governance.
