The Government of Ghana has officially commenced a nationwide registration of small-scale miners under the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP).

This initiative aims to transition informal, artisanal miners into legal, structured cooperatives, ensuring sustainable mining practices and improving their livelihoods.

Key details regarding the registration process include:

Purpose: To formalise the small-scale mining sector and eradicate illegal mining (galamsey) by providing legal recognition and support.
Process: The registration is a four-phase workflow, which involves capturing member details, verifying documentation, and assessing mining sites for viability.

Permitting: Qualified cooperatives will be issued a six-month Temporary Operating Permit to commence operations while their full 5-year renewable licensing is being processed.

Support: Registered groups will receive technical support and training on responsible mining practices.

On the registration of miners under the Responsible Cooperative Mining, the Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly today welcomed officials from the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP) Secretariat as part of the Government of Ghana’s nationwide registration exercise for small-scale miners.

This important initiative seeks to formalise and regulate small-scale mining activities across the country, promote responsible mining practices, and provide skills development opportunities for miners to enhance their livelihoods.

The exercise in the District marks a significant step towards ensuring sustainable mining, environmental protection, and improved economic outcomes for local communities.

The Assembly remains committed to supporting this initiative and collaborating with all stakeholders to achieve its intended objectives.
