Kumasi Mayor Promises Modern Markets, Better Roads and Improved Welfare for  Residents

The Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Kumasi through massive infrastructure development, market modernisation, improved transport systems and enhanced social welfare interventions.
Delivering his address during the First Ordinary Meeting of the Third Session of the Ninth Assembly, the Mayor outlined a number of key projects and interventions aimed at improving the living conditions of residents and positioning Kumasi as a modern commercial hub.
A major highlight of the address was the ongoing Kejetia/Central Market Redevelopment Project Phase II, which he said is progressing steadily. According to him, financing arrangements and implementation modalities are currently being finalised to ensure the successful execution of the project.
Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi explained that the redevelopment remains crucial to the Assembly’s vision of creating a fully modernised market enclave capable of boosting economic activities and improving trading conditions for thousands of traders and residents.
The Mayor also reiterated his administration’s determination to complete the Krofrom Market project under the Government’s 24-Hour Economy initiative. He disclosed that construction works have resumed with Attachy Constructions Ltd actively working on site to ensure the timely completion of the project.
According to him, consultant estimates indicate that about GH¢179 million is required to complete the market. However, government through the Social Investment Fund under the Ministry of Finance has secured GH¢100 million to support the completion works.
He praised President John Dramani Mahama and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for their commitment and support towards the successful completion of the project.
The Mayor further announced that a seven-member committee has been constituted to facilitate the allocation of spaces and develop operational modalities for the market upon completion.
Touching on urban mobility and transport management, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi revealed that the Assembly has intensified engagements with transport unions to address challenges such as illegal loading, unauthorized terminals, unlawful fares and permit violations.
He noted that special enforcement teams have also been deployed within the Central Business District to regulate traffic flow and reduce congestion.
As part of efforts to modernise the transport system, the Assembly has operationalised a Smart Transport System in partnership with Ibes AG to improve data collection and transport regulation within the metropolis.
Under the initiative, over 2,000 commercial vehicles have reportedly been registered and issued RFID-enabled destination stickers.
The Mayor also highlighted several ongoing road projects within the metropolis, including rehabilitation works in Bantama, Manhyia and Nhyiaeso, as well as the resumption of works on the Sunyani Road and Sofoline Interchange projects.
He assured residents that pothole patching and routine road maintenance works would continue across selected areas to improve transportation and ease vehicular movement.
On social welfare, the Mayor disclosed that the Assembly has supported several vulnerable persons, including Persons with Disabilities, through educational assistance, medical support and business startup interventions.
He further revealed that hundreds of vulnerable households within the metropolis have benefited from the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme, while more than 60 children have been enrolled onto the Integrated Social Services Programme to strengthen child protection and welfare services.
In the area of agriculture, the Mayor said the Assembly continues to support the government’s Feed Ghana Programme through the “Nkoko Nketenkete” initiative, which has already distributed over 16,000 birds to farmers and households across the metropolis.
Additionally, 25 young people have been trained in poultry production and agribusiness management to help reduce unemployment and promote youth participation in agriculture.
On education, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyeman Boadi noted that the Assembly recorded improvement in the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination results, with performance increasing from 92.54 percent in 2024 to 93.38 percent in 2025.
He also disclosed that the Assembly has intensified efforts to remove squatters, refuse dumps, abandoned vehicles and illegal activities from school premises to ensure a safe and conducive environment for teaching and learning.
The Mayor appealed to Assembly Members, stakeholders and residents to support the Assembly’s development agenda and work collectively towards building a cleaner, safer and more prosperous Kumasi.
