Telecommunications giant MTN Ghana has issued a strong warning to customers to remain vigilant against increasing cases of online scams and phishing attacks targeting mobile phone and internet users across the country.
In a public advisory, the company urged subscribers never to click on suspicious links received through WhatsApp messages, SMS, emails, or unfamiliar websites, stressing that fraudsters are increasingly disguising themselves as trusted individuals and institutions to steal sensitive personal information.
According to MTN Ghana, scammers often impersonate family members, friends, banks, government agencies, and reputable companies while sending deceptive messages that pressure victims to “verify accounts,” “claim prizes,” or “update personal details.”
The company cautioned customers against reacting hastily to such messages, especially those designed to create panic or excitement through promises of cash rewards, promotional deals, or urgent account verification requests.
“Be skeptical of messages that create a sense of urgency or offer deals that appear too good to be true,” the statement emphasized.
MTN Ghana further advised subscribers to verify the authenticity of any suspicious communication independently rather than responding directly to the sender or using contact details provided in such messages.
As part of measures to enhance digital safety, the telecommunications provider encouraged customers to always check whether websites are secure before entering sensitive information. Users were advised to ensure that web addresses begin with “https://” and display a padlock symbol in the browser bar, indicating a secure connection.
The company also recommended that customers use only official apps and verified websites when accessing services or carrying out transactions online.
MTN Ghana stressed that it would never request customers’ passwords, PINs, or full bank card details through text messages, links, or social media platforms.
The company called on anyone who encounters suspicious links or believes their personal information may have been compromised to report immediately through MTN customer support by dialing 100 or to contact the police on 0800311311.
The advisory forms part of MTN Ghana’s broader commitment to customer protection and cybersecurity awareness as digital fraud continues to evolve globally.
MTN Ghana, officially known as Scancom PLC, remains the leading telecommunications company in Ghana, providing mobile voice, data, and mobile financial services to millions of subscribers nationwide. The company is listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange and operates as part of the global MTN Group network.
